Interviews Season 41

Artemis Deniz, Musician, Meya Music

I was born and grew up in Turkey. When I was 13 years old, I started to take guitar lessons and then started to study classical music in fine arts high school by adding other instruments such as piano and violin.

After I graduated from music college, I started to travel worldwide. During this term, for a while, I settled down in Buenos Aires to improve my language skill and tango. Also, I had an opportunity to take singing classes and meet with musicians for my project.

What is your favourite social media platform, and why?

Instagram, because of its video feature. Especially I love watching dance videos.

“When I lived in Buenos Aires, the porter said to me: "Chica, don't rush! As long as you rush, you will always miss or forget something. He was right.”

What do you like about your career or area of focus?

I'd like to create a new sound, basically on Latin pop, but also it has to contain my roots. Let's say It is something mixed, modern and oriental. I could not deny my oriental side.

Simply, I'd say, a love of art moves me forward. Plus, the therapeutic power of music.

What are you proud of in your life so far?

I am very proud of myself for having endless perseverance.

What is your preferred way to meet new people/network?

I prefer to meet people in person. But for two years, it has been so difficult to carry out this.

What skills or qualities do you feel have helped you?

No doubt, my curiosity, communication skill and strong passion.

What do you wish you had known when you started out?

I wish I had known that the Z generation had different tastes. Because; It is very difficult to produce and be accepted in the age of consumption.

Who do you most admire in business, academic or creative circles and why?

Gloria Estefan is my idol. The first time when I listened to her sound, I was 17, I decided to sing in Spanish. In college, I made my own Latin band and started to make music. The other thing that I admired about her was her natural beauty and natural sound.

Outside of your professional/work area, what hobbies or interests do you have or what other areas of your life are of real importance to you?

Milonga has been a huge part of my life since I started to dance the tango. Also, I have a very deep interest in watching movies such as film noir and Nouvelle Vague. As long as I have spare time, I read especially poetic tema.

Both. I didn't work during that period. Instead, I composed my sound and wrote many lyrics.

Recently, my music producer has been my mentor. I feel so happy to meet and work with him.

What advice would you have for someone looking to get into the same area of work or interests?

Believing is a must item. If you start off on this path, you will always keep in your mind that obstacles are all around. The important thing going on in this way will be your dreams and beliefs.

What do you feel is the most common reason for people failing or giving up?

A person should listen to the voice of his own heart more than others. Trusting himself is another true key. Certainly, before that, one has to see, read, travel as much as possible, and analyze what surrounds one's life.

Is there a phrase, quote or a saying that you really like?

A German philosopher Friedrich Nietzsche said, "Without music, life would be a mistake."

What companies, brands, or institutions do you like or do you think are getting it right?

I think that the education, especially in the conservatory, is very good. But whether all trainers work with understanding music is where is debated. Because music is not only composed of notes and rhythm, it is very emotional.

How do you define success, and what lessons have you learned so far that you could share with our audience/readership?

I think success is being proud of what you do. Although the number of followers is perceived as an element of success today, I do not agree with this. Personal satisfaction matters.
